Whales Tails in Thames


Fears were growing today for a whale swimming up the Thames after it was seen floundering in the shallow margins of the river.

Crowds gathered on the banks of the Thames to observe the 4.5 metre (15ft) long mammal, which has been identified by the Natural History museum as a northern bottle-nosed whale.
The whale appeared to become distressed as it entered waist-high water near Battersea power station, but there was no expert confirmation of reports that blood had been seen in the water around it. A man waded into the river to try to direct the animal back into deeper water. Bystanders then lost sight of the creature as it swam below the surface.
