Prince William Opens Princess Diana Memorial Service

William, who was 15 when his mother, Princess Diana, died, gave a reading from St Paul's letter to the Ephesians.
Prince Harry has paid tribute to "the best mother in the world" at the memorial service to mark 10 years since the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

A MEMORIAL service led by Princes William and Harry marking the 10-year anniversary of the death of their mother, Diana, princess of Wales, got under way in London today with a reading by William, the future king.

Around 500 guests including senior royals, friends of Diana and politicians attended the ceremony, organised by the royal brothers and held at the Guards Chapel near Buckingham Palace in central London.

William, 25, read from Saint Paul's letter to the Ephesians in the Bible.

Members of the public were not invited, but hundreds of people gathered outside the chapel and cheered William and Harry as they arrived to greet guests.

Harry, 22, made a personal address during the event.

Those in attendance include Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles as well as Diana's two sisters and brother, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his predecessor Tony Blair.

The wife of Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, pulled out of attending the service Sunday, saying she did not want to be a distraction.

Diana had described Camilla as the third person in her marriage because she and Charles conducted a lengthy affair.

Mohamed Al Fayed, father of Diana's boyfriend Dodi, who was also killed in the crash, was not invited, but his daughter Camilla did go.

World Remembers Diana 10 Year Later

Even without meeting her, millions if not billions of people, felt the power of Princess Diana’s extraordinary charisma. Her glamour and high birth, her palpable humanity and equally palpable private anguish: Such qualities worked a powerful magic, setting her apart from the ruck of contemporary celebrities. Long before the horrific Paris car crash that brought her life to an untimely end on Aug. 31, 1997, Diana had transcended mere iconic status and become a late 20th century super icon. The most photographed woman in history, the subject of interminable analysis and speculation, the 36-year-old princess was an apotheosis-waiting-to-happen. From the moment news broke of her death, it was inevitable that the tragedy was going to be a multimedia event of epic dimensions.

What no one could have anticipated was the extreme and unruly nature of the emotions her death would unleash among British people. Censorious commentators were soon jibbing at the faintly menacing character of the prevailing grief, the apparent obligation to display suitably raw distress about the princess’ death or else suffer public obloquy. Seldom, to be sure, can mass grieving have seemed to pose such a threat to the status quo. Few doubt that the tumultuous reaction to Diana’s death came within a whisker of destabilizing the British monarchy and triggering a constitutional crisis. The initial unwillingness of Queen Elizabeth II to order that the flag above Buckingham Palace be flown at half-mast in homage to the dead princess was not well received. As floral tributes to Diana piled up outside Buckingham Palace, it became overwhelmingly apparent that the monarch had badly misjudged the public mood.(

Diana 10 Years Later - more Flowers

One of the 10 golden dandelions which make up Field of Flowers

A sculpture commemorating Diana, Princess of Wales was unveiled yesterday at her former home in Kensington Palace Gardens to mark the 10th anniversary of her death.

The "Field of Flowers" consists of 10 golden dandelions, each more than 11ft tall and crowned with hundreds of flower heads that have been decorated with gold leaf by visitors to the palace over the summer.

The work was designed by the artist Sofie Layton and based on dandelion seed clocks, said to be a reminder of much missed loved ones and symbolic of the passing of time.
It was inspired by the cascade of flowers that lined the paths to Diana's former home in the aftermath of her death in 1997.

The installation is not permanent and will be on display until the end of the year, along with an exhibition - Diana: A Princess Remembered - which features photographs of the princess, including Mario Testino's famous portraits, film footage and a collection of frocks.

The main part of the exhibition is formed by 15 images shot by Testino in 1997, a project that turned out to be the last official portrait photography of the princess.

Craig: "I Am Not Gay, I Never Have Been Gay"

Sen. Larry Craig said he "overreacted and made a poor decision" in pleading guilty to disorderly conduct after his June arrest following an incident in a Minneapolis, Minnesota, airport bathroom. A police mug shot of Sen. Larry Craig after he was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport in June.

Tuesday, in his first public statement on the arrest, the Idaho Republican said he did nothing "inappropriate."

"Let me be clear: I am not gay and never have been," said Craig, who has aligned himself with conservative groups who oppose gay rights.

With his wife by his side, Craig said he is the victim of a "witch hunt" conducted by the Idaho Statesman newspaper.

"In pleading guilty, I overreacted in Minneapolis, because of the stress of the Idaho Statesman's investigation and the rumors it has fueled around Idaho," he said. "Again, that overreaction was a mistake, and I apologize for my misjudgment."

He added: "I should not have kept this arrest to myself, and should have told my family and friends about it. I wasn't eager to share this failure, but I should have done so anyway."

A police officer who arrested him June 11 said Craig peered through a crack in a restroom stall door for two minutes and made gestures suggesting to the officer he wanted to engage in "lewd conduct." (Source)

AIDS Victims 'Buried Alive' in Papua New Guinea

SOME AIDS victims were being buried alive in Papua New Guinea by relatives who could look after them and fear becoming infected themselves, a health worker said today.

Margaret Marabe, who spent five months carrying out an AIDS awareness campaign in the remote Southern Highlands of the South Pacific nation, said she had seen five people buried alive.

One was calling out "Mama, Mama'' as the soil was shovelled over his head, said Ms Marabe, who works for a volunteer organisation called Igat Hope, Pidgin English for I've Got Hope.

"One of them was my cousin, who was buried alive,'' she said.

"I said, 'Why are they doing that?' And they said, 'If we let them live, stay in the same house, eat together and use or share utensils, we will contract the disease and we too might die'.''

Villagers had told her it was common for people to bury AIDS victims alive.

Ms Marabe appealed to the Government and aid agencies to ensure the HIV/AIDS awareness program in cities and towns was extended to the rural areas, where ignorance about the disease was widespread.

Women accused of being witches have been tortured and murdered by mobs holding them responsible for the apparently inexplicable deaths of young people stricken by the epidemic, officials and researchers say.

A recent United Nations report said PNG was facing an AIDS catastrophe, accounting for 90 per cent of HIV infections in the Oceania region.

HIV diagnoses had risen by around 30 per cent a year since 1997, leaving an estimated 60,000 people living with the disease in 2005. (
