Canadian Government Re-Opens Debate On Same Sex Marriage Law
Tories plan December vote on same-sex marriage
The Conservatives will follow through with their election promise to revisit same-sex marriage, with debate expected to begin as early as next week.
The government confirmed Tuesday they will begin debate Dec. 6th with a vote planned before the House breaks for the holidays.
The motion is expected to ask MPs to reopen discussion on same-sex marriage, but will not directly challenge the existing legislation. However, it may ask whether parliamentarians wish to repeal or amend the existing law.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said if the House votes against changing the law to allow same-sex marriages, the matter would be settled.
Same-sex marriage became legal in Canada last year when Parliament passed Bill C-38 in response to a series of court rulings that gay people had the right to marry.
During the election campaign, Harper promised to hold a free vote in the House of Commons on whether Parliament should revisit the issue. Following the election, Harper said the vote would be held this fall.
Earlier this month, a group advocating the right to same-sex marriage demanded Harper hold a fall vote on the issue, accusing him of delaying just to appease his political support base.
Laurie Arron, national co-ordinator of Canadians for Equal Marriage, said his group projects that Harper's motion to reopen the debate would lose by a 30- to 40-vote margin.(CBC.ca)

Barney Frank Pushs Military to End Gay Ban
Gay Democratic congressman Barney Frank, set to lead the House Financial Services Committee when the Democrats take back Congress in January, said along with a plan to increase the minimum wage he intends to push for a modification of the military's antigay ''don't ask, don't tell'' policy. The current policy prohibits officials from inquiring about the sex lives of service members and requires discharges of those who acknowledge being gay.
''One of things I do want to address, yes, is discrimination based on sexual orientation,'' Frank said on Fox News Sunday. ''In fact, what we have is a shortfall in the military. I think when you have people being fired who can read Arabic and understand Arabic, because of what they do when they're off duty, that that's a grave error. But that's not what we're going to begin with.''
A report in 2005 by the investigative arm of Congress estimated it cost the Pentagon around $200 million to recruit and train replacements for the nearly 9,500 troops that had to leave the military because of the ban on openly gay personnel. The losses included hundreds of highly skilled troops, including translators, from 1994 to 2003. (AP)

Madonna's Confessions Finishes Fourth
Madonna's much-hyped "Confessions" special on NBC finished a dismal fourth in the ratings on the night before Thanksgiving, watched by fewer people than even a replay of the movie "Cheaper by the Dozen."
NBC reported paid Madonna $15 million dollars to air the concert.
So what shows beat Madonna?
CBS' Jericho, ABC's Show Me The Money and Fox's airing of Cheaper By The Dozen.
Maybe NBC should have stopped editing the show for fear of offending everyone, instead they had almost no one watching.
Except for the gays!
