Milo Ventimiglia's Big Gay Following
Milo Ventimiglia talked to Advocate magazine about playing gay characters, his gay fan base, and his take on the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
Advocate: When did you first realize you had gay fans?
Milo Ventimiglia: It was way before Heroes or Gilmore Girls. I was about 19 or 20 years old. I'd done a short film when I was 18 called Must Be the Music, where I played a gay teenager. I was shopping with my mom and dad one weekend, and these two gay guys came up and said they'd seen the film at a film festival and they just thought I was great. That was actually the very first time I'd ever been recognized for anything. I'm glad that it was my first meeting with a fan, because it wasn't the standard 14-year-old girl chasing me down; it was men who were fans of the work. That was cool.
A: You recently visited our troops overseas on a USO tour. What's your take on "don't ask, don't tell"?
MV: When it comes down to it, gay or straight, you're holding a weapon and fighting for our country, so sexuality seems irrelevant. It bothers me that in this day and age people are still looked at differently for having a sexual orientation that isn't in agreement with an old institution such as the military. That being said, I can understand why a gay person in the military would just not want to say anything about it, because it would probably attract unnecessary attention. At the same time, it makes me sad to think that people can't live their life openly, thinking that they won't be accepted.(keep reading)

H.I.V. Spreading in NYC at Three Times the National Rate
The virus that causes AIDS is spreading in New York City at three times the national rate — an incidence of 72 new infections for every 100,000 people, compared with 23 per 100,000 nationally — according to a study released on Wednesday by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
The findings, based on a new formula developed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimated that 4,762 New Yorkers contracted H.I.V. in 2006, the most precise estimate the city had ever offered.
But the city stressed that because the method of estimating infections was new, it could not be said definitively whether the number of new infections in the city had increased or decreased from previous years.(keep reading)

La Tomatina Festival 2008
Revellers battle with tomato pulp during the annual "Tomatina" (tomato fight) in the Mediterranean village of Bunol, near Valencia, August 29, 2008.
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a brutal battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.
The week-long festival features music, parades, dancing, and fireworks. On the night before the tomato fight, participants of the festival compete in a paella cooking contest.
The festival is in honor of the town's patron saints, Luis Bertràn and the Mare de Déu dels Desemparats (Mother of God of the Defenseless), a title of the Virgin Mary.

Most NY Gay Couples Live Outside Manhattan
A new study of US Census Bureau statistics shows that nearly two-thirds of New York City’s same-sex couples live outside of Manhattan including 92-percent of those raising children.
The study also found that nearly half of the same-sex couples in the Bronx have children.
The results were released Tuesday by the Williams Institute, a research facility at the University of California Los Angeles.
The study was based on data from Census 2000. It found there are nearly 26,000 same-sex couples in New York City, but that 62-percent live outside of Manhattan.
“We need to look beyond Will and Grace to understand the lives of gay and lesbian New Yorkers,” said study co-author and Senior Research Fellow Gary Gates.
Census data show that New York City¹s same-sex couples are raising an estimated 8,400 children in their homes.(keep reading)

Ed Westwick: I'm Not Humping Chace Crawford
In this week's Page Six Magazine, Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick refutes the rumors that he is gay and that he is in a relationship with his roommate / co-star, Chase Crawford.
"People think Chace is gay, and thought I was gay, that we were humping. It's not true, but hilarious. People project their fantasies onto people. I've never been someone who makes it my objective to go out and pick up chicks. But I've met some fantastic ladies here. You know those amazing conversations where you find yourself in a café talking until 2 a.m. and never see them again."
