Alexandre Despatie & Arturo Miranda Fail to Medal

Another day, another disappointment for Canada at the Summer Olympic Games.

The team of Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda was expected to produce Canada's first medal at the Summer Olympics. Instead, Despatie and Miranda were left trying to explain what went wrong and how a second place performance at last year's world championships saw them finish a rather uninspired fifth Wednesday afternoon at Water Cube.

"I feel we gave that medal away," said Mitch Geller, the Dive Canada technical director and head of the Canadian team here. "They were off today."

They may not necessarily have been off but Miranda certainly had difficulty matching the high level of Despatie. In a way it was reminiscent of trying to pair tennis player Daniel Nestor with a partner of his caliber.

Despatie has not equal at this time as a Canadian diver and the 37-year-old Miranda, in his first Olympics, couldn't keep up.(
