Victimization of Gay Teens Increase Suicide Rates

Being victimized because of sexual orientation is a chief risk factor for suicidal behavior among gay, lesbian and bisexual U.S. college students.

University of Washington researcher Heather Murphy also uncovered a group of students who previously had not been studied and are at increased risk for suicidal behavior -- students who identify themselves as heterosexual, but also report being attracted to people of the same sex or engaging in same-sex behavior. This group was three times as likely as heterosexuals to have made a plan to commit suicide in the past year and six times more likely to have actually attempted suicide in the same period, Murphy said.

Gay, lesbian and bisexual students also were twice as likely as heterosexuals to have planned and to have attempted suicide in the previous year.

Murphy had more than 500 students answer questionnaires containing 86 questions and found 56 of the students said they had seriously considered suicide in the previous 12 months, while a dozen of them attempted suicide.

The study found gay, lesbian and bisexuals and the same-sex attracted heterosexuals, experienced significantly more verbal and physical victimization than did heterosexual students.

Ramrod Bartender Critical After Hit & Run

A local gay bartender is in critical condition after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run incident on Sept. 18 in front of Ramrod bar in Fort Lauderdale. It was the second serious incident involving a pedestrian being struck on 4th Avenue near the bar in the past three months.

Thomas Davis, 32, was crossing 4th Avenue to go to work at the bar when he was struck at about 10:15 p.m., according to a police statement. Davis suffered a broken leg, head trauma, a lacerated liver and bruised lungs.

A witness who was working security outside the bar when the incident occurred said the car sped up and swerved to hit Davis.

“From my vantage point, it was clearly deliberate,” said Marcus Hopkins, one of two security men outside Ramrod who witnessed the incident. Hopkins said Davis crossed the street half way and stopped to wait for cars to pass before continuing. When Davis was nearly on the other side of the street, Hopkins said he heard a car engine rev and saw a white car appear to swerve toward Hopkins. He said Davis’ right foot was on the curb when he was struck.

“The car did not pause; it did not slow down,” Hopkins said. “It just plowed right through him. [The driver] did not break at all. There were no skid marks or tire marks on the road.”(

General Pace Repeats View That Gay Sex Immoral

Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, caused a stir at a Senate hearing Wednesday when he repeated his view that gay sex is immoral and should not be condoned by the military.

Pace, who retires next week, said he was seeking to clarify similar remarks he made in spring, which he said were misreported.

"Are there wonderful Americans who happen to be homosexual serving in the military? Yes," he told the Senate Appropriations Committee during a hearing focused on the Pentagon's 2008 war spending request.

"We need to be very precise then, about what I said wearing my stars and being very conscious of it," he added. "And that is, very simply, that we should respect those who want to serve the nation but not through the law of the land, condone activity that, in my upbringing, is counter to God's law."

Anti-war protesters sitting behind Pace jeered the four-star general's remarks with some shouting, "Bigot!" That led Committee Chairman Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., to abruptly adjourn the hearing and seal off the doors.

The hearing resumed about five minutes later in which Pace said he would be supportive of efforts to revisit the Pentagon's policy so long as it didn't violate his belief that sex should be restricted to a married heterosexual couple

US Senate Passes the Matthew Sheppard Act 60-39

Senate votes 60-39 for cloture on hate crimes legislation; voice vote adds Kennedy-Smith hate crimes amendment to Department of Defense authorization bill.
The proposed legislation will strengthen the ability of federal, state and local governments to investigate and prosecute hate crimes based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability and gender identity.
It would also enable the US Justice Department to assist in the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes. The bill will also provide grants to help state and local governments meet the extraordinary expenses involved in hate crime cases.
According to the FBI, sexual orientation bias motivated 14% of such crimes in 2005.
However, last month a White House spokesman reiterated that President Bush will veto the hate crimes legislation.

Brad Pitt Just Pledged $5 Million for New Orleans Rebuild

Hollywood film star Brad Pitt just pledged $5 million toward rebuilding the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans at the Clinton Global Initiative on Wednesday afternoon.
"We're prepared to break ground by the end of the year, but we need your help," the actor said of his commitment to helping rebuild the New Orleans area hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina. "We will match dollar for dollar any and every single contribution up to $10 million."

Pitt is working with film producer Steve Bing on the 'Make It Right' project. The effort seeks to install 150 affordable and sustainable homes. Bing also pledged $5 million in matching donations.

The male half of the Brangelina celebrity phenomenon spoke of the work his group already had performed in support of the project. The three day event in New York is an opportunity for the keepers of 602 such 'commitments' to report progress on pledges they made at earlier CGI gatherings, and make new ones.(keep reading)
