Gays in Costa Rica Now Allowed to Give Blood

The gay community in Costa Rica wants to express their appreciation to president Oscar Arias, for signing the executive decree that allows homosexuals and bisexuals to donate blood by eliminating its prohibition.

The decree lifts a prohibition on gays donating blood and all that it requires is publication in the official government daily, La Gaceta, which is expected in the first week in August.

According to Alberto Cabezas, activist for human rights and who spearheaded the fight, the action of the Arias government is an example for many other countries who are just beginning to discuss the issue.

"President Arias has always treated us with equality, has made it clear that we are humans and have the same rights. For us it is a victory of a fight that began last October, when started collecting signatures", said Cabezas.

Cabezas added that he would like to have a celebration where they would invite both president Arias and Health Minister, María Luisa Avila, who was also instrumental in the change.(

Scissor Sister's Jake Shears is Getting Married to his Boyfriend Chris

Scissor Sister's Jake Shears is getting hitched to his boyfriend Chris.

Elton John's posh Windsor wedding to David Furnish will look like a granny's garden party compared to plans Jake has in store for his big day next year.

Kylie, Matt Lucas and Little Britain's David Walliams and Geri Halliwell have been ordered to clear their diaries for a "glorious" day in Springtime in New York. The ceremony itself will be in nearby New Jersey where same sex marriage is legal. I hope the guests pack their sunglasses as Jake has been talking about making it technicolour, with brightly coloured daffodils and tulips, a striped wedding suit, a flock of white doves and confetti at the beginning and end. Jake, whose band sold out three nights at Greenwich's O2 arena last week, popped the question after splashing out on a love nest in New York with Chris.

It's the icing on the cake for the eight-year relationship between Jake and Chris, a Yale art student. Chris has so far kept out of the public eye by refusing to be photographed with Jake or revealing his surname in interviews.

"Desperate Housewives" To Add a Gay Couple

That's right: Desperate Housewives, which had frustratingly put the storyline of gay teen Andrew Van De Kamp (Shawn Pyfrom) on the back burner in Season 3, is finally having its first same-sex couple move into the neighborhood. "We're going to have the first male desperate housewives," said Cherry, the show's gay creator and head writer. "They will move into the old Applewhite house and one of the gay men will just have a fractious, hateful relationship with Teri Hatcher."

So who will play the same-sex couple? Roger Bart, so fabulous as the gay "wife" in the remake of "The Stepford Wives" a few years back would be perfect for one half but he's already played a heterosexual on Housewives and a creepy one at that: Bree's wacko pharmacist beau who killed her first husband, Rex.

Said Cherry about potential actors for the part: "We just started writing the episodes so I probably won't start casting for another few weeks."( from AfterElton:

Montreal Pride Parade Returns to the Light

Montreal's first daytime gay-pride parade since 2004 pulled in a buoyant downtown crowd yesterday which organizers said exceeded 50,000 far above their earlier predictions of 30,000.

Many spectators showed up in family groups, basking under brilliant early-afternoon sunshine, smiling and often swaying to the punchy music.

They were packed as much as 15 deep in some spots along the 16-block downtown route, arrayed on the banks of a spectacular river of 1,500 marchers combining colour and movement.

For Juliette Galarada, almost 9 years old, "the costumes" not the crowd size proved the highlight.

The youngster delivered that verdict as the last of 70 groups finished their relaxed, one-hour saunter west along Rene Levesque Blvd. E.

The first large contingent 22 bikers from the Association des motocyclistes gais du Quebec, celebrating the group's 17th anniversary kick-started the event at 1:10 p.m. just east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge.

The final float crossed the finish line at St. Hubert St. at 3:04 p.m.

Any particular favourite for young Juliette?

She had, after all, an arresting range of choice. These included fabulous plumed headpieces and four parade leaders dressed to embody fire, earth, air and water.

She could also have chosen a half-dozen transvestites clad in tight neon-green gowns, or for that matter, their companions on an elaborate float equipped with a twirly water fountain a group of lithe young men wearing only the skimpiest of pink briefs.

"I loved them all," Juliette responded.

Her brother Lorenzo, 3 in September, smiled shyly but stayed mute.

"We don't have anything like this in Cuba," marvelled Olga Falcon, part of Juliette and Lorenzo's six-person family group. "This is special."

No Gay Kissing at the Colosseum Please!

Italian Gays Stage 'kiss-in' ProtestGay rights campaigners in Rome have held "kiss-in" protests in front of the Colosseum in response to the arrest of two men.

Police insisted the men, aged 27 and 28, were held for "lewd acts" in the capital but activists insisted they were merely being affectionate.

They now face a trial for public indecency, punishable by up to two years in jail.

Centre-left government politicians weighed into the row, accusing the Carabinieri of harassment - but the police maintained they had merely been applying the law.

Health minister Livia Turco said the arrests were "excessive" and called for an apology.

An official report to the prosecutors claims the men had "their trousers and underpants down".

However, the men have said they were just kissing. (

Clinton & Obama Fighting for the Gay Dollar

Nationally, gay voters seem to overwhelmingly support Democrats in the 2008 presidential campaign, with Hillary Clinton holding onto a clear lead - and Michigan is providing a good illustration.

Fifty-four percent of the contributions from the state's two gayest ZIP codes to the top three polling Democrats have gone to Clinton so far this year; that compares to 48 percent of contributions from the gayest ZIP codes nationally.

That's what data from the first two quarterly fundraising reports suggest. The Federal Elections Commission made the July quarterly report available online last week on July 15. That data, added to the April quarterly, provides an indirect measure of support inside ZIP codes areas with well-known, heavily-gay neighborhoods, such as 90069 in West Hollywood and 02657 in Provincetown, Mass.

Looking at contributions to the top three polling Democratic candidates for president, the data from the first two quarterly reports of the 2008 campaign season show that nationally, Clinton is leading in heavily gay areas with 48 percent of the contributions, Barack Obama is in second with 39 percent, and John Edwards trails with 13 percent. Looking at all six candidates - top three Democrats and top three Republicans - she's leading with 37 percent of the contributions.

Erasure Singer Andy Bell Talks About Discovering He Was HIV+ & more..

Interview by Hannah Pool
Thursday July 26, 2007
The Guardian

You're back with a new album but you've not had a top-10 hit for 10 years. Do you mind?

You really can't mind, otherwise you'd just be bitter - you just have to go with it. I do get narked, I must admit, when I see certain people on chat shows all the time. I think we don't get the exposure that we deserve. We're either in fashion or out completely, and I think we've been out completely for quite a while. But then I think, "So what?"

You were diagnosed with HIV in 1998. How did you react?

I kind of knew. It was one of those things. I'd been a bit self-destructive for a while and this seemed to be part of that. It's amazing how much pain the body puts up with.

Is there a complacency among gay men about HIV?

There are definitely HIV-positive people who meet other HIV-positive men, and like still having unprotected sex. I think it must be quite hard for young gay men because there is so much for them now to do - there are so many saunas and stuff like that for them to go to, and it's so easy to get it.

You've had both hips replaced?

That was caused by avascular necrosis, which is the blood supply drying up at the top of the bone. It can be from cocaine use. There is not much history of it from HIV. I was walking around like a monkey - the skeletal support goes, you're holding on to things. I saw the Queen Mum's surgeon. It takes a while to be able to walk, about three to four months per leg.

Has your dancing changed since?

I'm not pogoing around.

Has gay culture become depoliticised?

Definitely, it has been made very commercial. In some ways it's good because the culture has been disseminated, but a lot of it is quite superficial.

Weren't Erasure part of that superficiality?

We're not about the body beautiful. It's about being an old drag queen, and being all craggy, with in-your-face seaside humour.

Is the gay political struggle over?

In some ways yes, because the age of consent is the same in law. But as far as homophobia goes in Russia or Poland, places like that, there's still loads to do.

· Erasure's Light at the End of the World tour starts on September 3
