Gays in Costa Rica Now Allowed to Give Blood

The gay community in Costa Rica wants to express their appreciation to president Oscar Arias, for signing the executive decree that allows homosexuals and bisexuals to donate blood by eliminating its prohibition.

The decree lifts a prohibition on gays donating blood and all that it requires is publication in the official government daily, La Gaceta, which is expected in the first week in August.

According to Alberto Cabezas, activist for human rights and who spearheaded the fight, the action of the Arias government is an example for many other countries who are just beginning to discuss the issue.

"President Arias has always treated us with equality, has made it clear that we are humans and have the same rights. For us it is a victory of a fight that began last October, when started collecting signatures", said Cabezas.

Cabezas added that he would like to have a celebration where they would invite both president Arias and Health Minister, María Luisa Avila, who was also instrumental in the change.(
