HIV Rate Up 12% Among Young Gay US Men

Steepest Rise Is in Black Males Ages 13 to 24

The number of young homosexual men being newly diagnosed with HIV infection is rising by 12 percent a year, with the steepest upward trend in young black men, according to a new report.

The double-digit increase in young gay men is about 10 times higher than in the homosexual community overall, where the number of new infections is going up about 1.5 percent a year.

The report, released yesterday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, appears to confirm impressions that a "second-wave" AIDS epidemic is underway in gay America.

"These men represent a new generation that has not been personally affected by AIDS in the same way that their older peers were," said Richard Wolitski, acting director of HIV-AIDS prevention at CDC.

The new data cover 33 states. Whether they reflect the entire country is unknown, although the states include New York, Florida, New Jersey and Texas, all of which have large numbers of HIV-infected people. (

Soldiers March in Toronto Gay Pride Parade

For the first time, members of Canada's Armed Forces represented the military in Toronto's annual Gay Pride parade, held Sunday.

Lt. Steven Churm, one of 10 soldiers from across the country who marched in uniform, said their presence sends a message that the Canadian military is inclusive and an equal-opportunity employer.

"The message to the public is that the Canadian Forces is an employer of choice. We have employment opportunities that people can pursue, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation," he told CBC News.

"For our own members, they can be proud of what they're doing and also be proud of who they are."

To mark its place in the festivities, the Canadian Forces set up an information booth in an area of the city where thousands of people gathered for the start of the parade.

The parade is the main event for Canada's largest gay pride celebration and marks the end of a week of festivities that organizers say attracted about one million people. (CBC)

Hottie Chace Crawford Still Not Gay

Gossip Girl actor Chace Crawford - who's been rumored to be dating former N'Sync singer JC Chasez - denies that he is gay and in love with the former boyband star.

"You've got to laugh it off. You haven't made it unless there's been a gay rumor about you. There are so many fabrications. They take your picture with someone and then say you're having a relationship with them. I let it roll off my back," Crawford, 22, tells Metro.co.uk.

"So you're not having a secret gay fling with ex-'N Sync singer JC Chasez?," Metro asks the actor.

"No, of course not," Crawford replies.

Metro won't let it go quite yet and asks the young hunk if he has a favourite 'N Sync song. "No, I don't," Crawford answers.(

Ian Thorpe Sues French Newspaper Over Drug Claim

OLYMPIC champion Ian Thorpe has launched defamation action against a French newspaper which aired claims of an irregular drug test.

The allegations appeared in March last year in an online edition of the French newspaper L'Equipe.

The report, based on leaked information, claimed a dope test in 2006 revealed abnormally high readings for testosterone and a hormone in Thorpe's system.

Thorpe expressed his shock at the time, saying he had never cheated and always complied with my obligations to the anti-doping code to the letter.

"My reputation as a fair competitor is the most valuable thing I take out of my time in swimming," the retired champion told the media last April.(
