Obama Marks Gay Pride at the White House
President Obama on Monday became the first Oval Office occupant to officially celebrate gay pride in the White House even as the gay community remains bitterly divided about the pace of Obama's efforts to turn words into action for their agenda.
In recognizing the march of progress since the protests outside New York's Stonewall Inn 40 years ago, Obama achieved a milestone for many gay and lesbian Americans who mark the day as the beginning of their modern rights movement.

New York Celebrates 40th Anniversary Stonewall
Sao Paulo’s is bigger. San Francisco’s is more raucous. Moscow’s is braver. Tel Aviv’s is newer. But no Pride Parade matches New York City’s, because this is where it all began.
Forty years ago, a group of patrons at a dive bar in Greenwich Village were interrupted by a police raid. This was nothing out of the ordinary; gay bars were routinely by the police. Only this time, the people in the Stonewall Inn fought back. It had happened before: There were riots when police closed a bar in San Francisco and in Los Angeles, both earlier in the ’60s.
What made this one different was not only the intensity in the politically charged atmosphere of the Village during that long, hot summer of 1969, an anti-police riot was something that everyone could participate in but the duration (nearly a week) and the aftermath. (keep reading)

Farrah Fawcett Dies at 62
Farrah Fawcett died this morning at 9:28 a.m. at the St. John's Health Center in Los Angeles after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. She was 62.
The '70s style icon and "Charlie's Angels" star was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 2, 1947 and attended the University of Texas at Austin. She got her first career break in the late 1960s, appearing in TV commercials and then guest-starring on TV shows

Meet Derek Chavez - “The Real World: Cancun”
The Advocate chats with Derek Chavez, the openly gay cast member on MTV’s “The Real World: Cancun”
Before everyone arrived, before all eight beds were claimed, and before names had been exchanged, members of The Real World: Cancún cast asked the gay question. They knew there was one among them.
This year (the season kicks off on MTV Wednesday), Derek Chavez says he’s anything but a token, for-your-entertainment gay.
After taking a four-month break from earning his kinesiology degree at Arizona State University, the 21-year-old speaks of each real world -- the taped and the almost ordinary. (keep reading)
