Obama Signs "Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hates Prevention Act"
President Obama signed into law the Matthew Shepard & James Byrd Jr. Hates Prevention Act during a White House signing ceremony on Wednesday.The legislation expands the definition of federal hate crimes to include sexual orientation and gender identity.
The act makes it a federal crime to assault someone because of their sexual orientation, disability or gender identity. It is named for the victims of two horrific crimes in 1998: Matthew Shepard, a gay teenager from Wyoming who was beaten to death; and James Byrd. Jr., a black man from Texas who was tied to a pick-up track and dragged to death.(AP)

Repeal of Immigrant HIV Ban In Final Stages
The cruel and unnecessary ban on HIV+ immigrants and non-immigrants is a tiny step away from being history, as of this past Thursday.This past summer, the U.S. Health and Human Services published proposed regulations to bring them in line with the Congressional repeal of the HIV ban in the last weeks of the Bush presidency in December 2008.
With these changes, HIV will no longer be considered a "communicable disease of public health significance" and will no longer be a grounds of "inadmissibility" as it has been for more than 20 years for non-immigrants and immigrants. The comment period for the proposed regulations ended on August 17.(keep reading)

Hundreds Attend Vigil for Christopher Skinner
An estimated crowd of about 1,000 people gathered at Church and Wellesley Sts in Toronto to hold a vigil and march for Chris Skinner, who was brutally murdered Oct 18. Mourners and protestors observed a moment of silence, filling the block of Church St between Wellesley and Maitland from sidewalk to sidewalk, raising candles and pride flags to honour the slain 27-year-old.
The march ended at Victoria and Adelaide Sts, where, Chris Skinner was beaten by a group of men and deliberately run over with an SUV. (keep reading)
Yankees Win 40th Pennant & Go to World Series
The New York Yankees are back in the World Series, thanks in large part to some of the key guys who got them there last time.Andy Pettitte pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, Derek Jeter drew three walks and scored a run, and Mariano Rivera worked the final two innings for the save as New York captured the American League pennant with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday night in the Bronx.

I'm so happy for my friend Lavi Soloway & his partner Sebastian Dungan who were just married in Toronto.Sebastian Alexis Dungan and Lavi Sholem Soloway were married Tuesday in Toronto. Justice Harvey P. Brownstone of the Ontario Court of Justice officiated in his chambers.
Lavi (top photo - left), 43, is a partner in the law firm Masliah & Soloway in New York. He works there and in Los Angeles. He is also a founder of Immigration Equality, a nonprofit advocacy organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and H.I.V.-positive immigrants. He graduated from the University of Toronto and received a law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.
Sebastian (top photo - right), 37, is an independent film producer in Los Angeles. He produced “Transamerica,” which was released in 2005. He graduated from Yale.

A new surveillance video involving the death of Christopher Skinner suggests his assailants may have attacked him because his hand struck their SUV moments before a fight began that ended with his death.
Skinner, 27, was beaten by two to four men at Victoria and Adelaide Sts. shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday October 18 and left lying on the pavement in front of a black SUV, witnesses said.
According to those accounts, the vehicle's driver then deliberately drove over Skinner with both the front and rear wheels.

Simpson-Wentz's Violet and Egglesfield's Auggie have been part of the murder mystery involving Sydney (Laura Leighton), whose death kicked off the season and who's been seen in flashbacks.
