Gay Couple Arrested in Mexico for Kissing
Two male U.S. citizens were arrested in Playa del Carmen, in Mexico's Quintana Roo state, for kissing and hugging in public, the Mexico City daily El Universal reported Oct. 22.
Eric Schroeder, 22, and Jose Mendez, 35, were accused of committing "a moral misdeed" (una falta a la moral), jailed for 15 hours and fined 2,000 pesos ($148).
Schroeder told the paper that on Oct. 10 the couple was "resolving some differences that we had" and, as they walked out of the house, "there were a few hugs and a kiss out front."
At that point, police arrived, handcuffed them, then drove them around while they "picked up more people who presumably had committed other crimes," he said.
"They wanted money and realizing they weren't going to get it, they drove us around," Schroeder said.
The couple's eventual incarceration at the main police station ended after they paid a cop a 300-peso fee to take one of their credit cards and withdraw money to pay the 2,000-peso fine, Schroeder said.(source)

"Footloose" Movie to Be Fast-Tracked for Zac Efron
There's a new Ren coming up quickly on the horizon.
After Zac Efron's stellar weekend at the box office in "High School Musical 3," Paramount has fast-tracked the remake of "Footloose," according to Variety. The remake will pair Efron with "HSM" director Kenny Ortega, Variety reported, and filming is likely to begin this spring.
Although the original wasn't a musical, the new version reportedly will include songs written specifically for the remake as well as the original's hits. Earlier this month, "Footloose" star Kevin Bacon gave young Efron his blessing, and Efron is pumped about the endorsement.
"It's great," he told MTV News. "I couldn't be more excited. He's the man."
Although Efron dances in "HSM" and will be dancing a lot more in "Footloose," he said he doesn't consider himself a dancer.(MTV)

Mayor Gavin Newsom Campaigns Against Prop 8
In the last week of what could be one of the most important political fights of his career, Mayor Gavin Newsom is campaigning heavily against Proposition 8, turning to his supporters with pleas to vote and convince their friends and relatives to oppose the same-sex marriage ban.
The mayor is hosting a private fundraiser at his Russian Hill home tonight and has already picked up $125,000 in contributions from those attending the event. This afternoon, he's holding a forum with employees at Google, and over the next several days he'll be hitting nearly every major Bay Area radio station and staging rallies around the city.
Newsom says he owes it to his constituents in San Francisco to do everything in his power to fight the initiative. But political analysts note that the outcome of Tuesday's election could weigh heavily on Newsom's future in politics, and specifically his potential bid for governor.(keep reading)

Killer of Gay Windsor Student/Bartender & Two Others Sentenced to Life
Jesse Imeson, 23, is led away on Monday after pleading guilty in Goderich, Ont., to killing a student in Windsor, Ont., and an older farm couple in Mount Carmel, Ont.
Mr. Imeson had been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Mrs. Regier, 73, and her 72-year-old husband. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge, and was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
He also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for killing student Carlos Rivera, 25, in Windsor, a few days before he shot the Regiers.
He was sentenced to life without parole eligibility for 15 years on that count.
"Carlos, in a way, helped take a demon out of society," the victim's brother, Hugo Rivera, said in a statement.
According to an agreed statement of facts, Mr. Imeson strangled Mr. Rivera with a belt after waking up and finding the architecture student performing a sex act on him.
The two had spent much of the night drinking after they struck up a conversation on July 17, 2007, at the Tap, a gay strip club in Windsor where Mr. Rivera worked part time as a bartender and Mr. Imeson had gone looking for work as an exotic dancer.
"The gay guy - if I had to do it again, I would do it," Mr. Imeson would later tell an undercover police officer.(read more)

Hate Crime Down in 2007 but Anti-Gay Crime Up
The FBI reported more than 7,600 hate crimes incidents in 2007, down about 1 percent from the previous year. The decline was driven by decreases in the two largest categories of hate crimes — crimes against race and religion.
But incidents linked to prejudice against sexual orientation, the third-largest category, increased about 6 percent, the report found.
The FBI report does not compare its data from one year to the next because the number of law enforcement agencies participating in the annual count varies from year to year. More agencies contributed to the 2007 report than the 2006 report, however.(keep reading)
