Hanging 10 : 'Shelter' - Movie Review

Shelter is about a young man named Zach, played brilliantly by Trevor Wright, who is struggling to take care of his wayward sister and her son after the death of their mother. Zach is a typical California 20- something who has a talent for art, but has forgone his future in order to stay at home with his family.

While Zach may be typical on the outside, with his love of surfing and skateboarding, his struggle to find his place in the world becomes evident when he reunites with his best friend's gay brother Shaun, played by Brad Rowe.

Young guys, skateboards, beaches. Another of those movies, on might conclude. But reviewer Dylan Vox says the film avoids the pitfalls.

We’ve all seen those typical gay films... coming of age stories in which which characters are introduced to the 'thump, thump' world of gay bars, then struggle to fit in. But throughout Shelter, gay director/writer Jonah Markowitz manages to steer clear of those clichéd gay stereotypes and has crafted a simple story about universal love between gay men, told against the sexy surf of So. Cal.

Vox is clearly enchanted by the director's fresh take on a simple love story.

Unlike most gay movies, there isn’t a lot of unnecessary skin showed or lavish bar room scenes that help propel the characters into gay life. It’s a simple story about creating a family, and as Markowitz explains, “love is love.” That message is something he hopes audiences will leave the theatre with after experiencing one truly original movie.

Trojan Condoms Wants Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp has been offered a staggering $10m (€6.3m) to become the face for American condom giant Trojan.

According to reports, Trojan bosses believe the 'Donnie Brasco' actor - who is an advocate of safe sex - would considerably boost sales of their Magnum range, and help inspire an anti-AIDS campaign to send free condoms to less economically developed countries.

Although Depp has yet to make a formal decision about the offer, safe sex campaigners have already expressed their approval of Trojan's choice.

A spokeswoman for California's Safer Sex Awareness Campaign says: "We'd welcome seeing a major Hollywood star helping to promote the cause. And there's no one bigger than Johnny."(

"Earth Hour" Goes Global

Canada's CN Tower, normally aglow with light displays, is seen dark between office towers in Toronto, March 29, 2008. Non-essential lighting in government and office buildings as well as residences was turned off for one hour to publicize the effects of climate change.
This combination of two images of the Sydney skyline were photographed at 8:20pm on March 28, 2008 (top) and during earth hour at 8:20pm on March 29, 2008. Thousands of lights that illuminate office buildings, public structures and monuments were switched off Saturday evening, darkening the city's iconic skyline for one hour, in an effort to publicise the effects of climate change.
A combo picture shows the Royal Castle in Stockholm, Sweden, moments before (top) and after the lights were switched off for Earth Hour, March 29, 2008.

The Sydney Opera House to San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge went dark as people switched off lights in their homes and skylines dimmed around the world on Saturday to show concern with global warming.

Up to 30 million people were expected to have turned off their lights for 60 minutes by the time "Earth Hour" -- which started in Suva in Fiji and Christchurch in New Zealand -- completed its cycle westward.

More than 380 towns and cities and 3,500 businesses in 35 countries signed up for the campaign that is in its second year after it began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia's largest city.
