Toronto Condo Aimed at Gay, Lesbian Community

TORONTO (Reuters) - Developers in Toronto are planning a 200-suite condominium building in the city core that will be aimed squarely at gay and lesbian buyers.

Developers of the building, called The Bohemian, are betting that marketing the project to a gay and lesbian audience will reap solid returns in a city known for its tolerance.

The Vivat Group, which is helping to finance the project, said on Wednesday it is the first condo in Canada built for gays and lesbians, although other buyers will not be turned away. Similar projects are planned for Los Angeles, Boston and Portland, Oregon, but are largely focused on the elderly gay and lesbian population.

Vivat, which was established to build housing for gays and lesbians, says The Bohemian will offer "artful living" with "like-minded" people.

"Each resident will know that they are part of a community that cares about them and supports them," said Vivat Group president Gordon Davies.

The developers plan to break ground next year. A 601-square-foot, one bedroom apartment will cost C$185,000 ($161,000 USD).
