Ian Thorpe signs Adidas mega-deal

IAN Thorpe has signed a seven-year, $10 million deal with adidas – providing compelling evidence of his desire to extend his career beyond the 2008 Olympics.

The swimming megastar, 23, signed off on the deal shortly before Christmas, after six months of secret negotiations. It is believed to be incentive driven.

Thorpe's existing deal was due to expire after the Commonwealth Games in March. But he is now part of the adidas stable until 2013.

The deal does not require Thorpe to swim beyond
Beijing, but the length of the new contract suggests he is considering a crack at the London Olympics in 2012.

"This deal will send out a message to people that Ian is serious in his commitment to swimming," Thorpe's manager, David Flaskas, said.

He said Thorpe was rejuvenated after an extended break following the Athens Olympics.
