Elvis 30 Years After Death, Still Kicken

Some celebrities never die. They become eternal brands.

Take Elvis Presley. Thirty years ago today, The King vacated this mortal realm while perched atop his porcelain throne. At the time, it was an indecorous end. In retrospect, it was a new beginning.

Each year, Elvis returns from the building he never left, appearing in new specials, lending his music to films, endorsing a vast array of products, thrusting his pelvis all the way to the posthumous bank.

He placed second in Forbes' 2006 list of "Top Earning Dead Celebrities." (Elvis Presley Enterprises brought in $42 million last year, behind only Kurt Cobain, who grunged up $50 million from beyond the grave.)

Graceland, Presley's fabled mansion, is getting a $250 million facelift, replete with new buildings, hotels, a museum and diversions for those making the pilgrimage to Memphis.

The goal? Triple annual attendance. Get this: nearly half of the 600,000 visitors to Graceland each year are now under the age of 35.

Honestly, kids these days.
