Amsterdam Pride 07 - Good & Bad

GOOD:
An act called "The Pink Police" performs on a boat during a parade in one of the canals of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Saturday Aug. 4, 2007. Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and a large contingent of heterosexuals are putting on their brightest plumage, and a rainbow fleet is set to sail through Amsterdam's historic canals Saturday, as the city celebrates its annual Gay Pride festival.

The flotilla and party afterward is one of the biggest of the year in Amsterdam, and one in which the city upholds its reputation as one of Europe's gayest capitals. DJs pump music from ships packed with dancing partygoers, vying for who can put on the best show or provide the most outrageous theme.

Visitors can expect to see plenty of men wearing leather thong underwear, cowboy hats, disco glitter, and nothing else.

BAD:
Gays attacked during Amsterdam Gay Pride:
A number of homosexuals were assaulted in two separate incidents during the Gay Pride weekend in Amsterdam. On Saturday night a 34-year-old Irish man was attacked in the vicinity of the Kinkerstraat, police announced on Monday.

The Irishman was walking with his Spanish boyfriend when he got in an argument with two aggressive men. After a hand gesture by the Irishman the two struck him with a hard object, after which the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He underwent surgery to his jaw and other treatment. The police strongly suspect that the man was attacked because of his sexual orientation.

Two American men were attacked on the Nassaukade on Friday night. One was beaten and sprayed in the face with pepper spray or tear gas. The police suspect that the violence in this case was also motivated by hate towards gays, but are not ruling out the incident may have been a mugging.(

It doesn't surprise me at all. You can't honestly expect everyone to be cool with homosexuality.

It's a shame but if you value your life you maybe need to be a little more discreet and civilised as well as modest.

I am a gay man but I would never think of dressing like a drag queen and parading myself in public like that. Even I do not understand why gay people need to celebrate their sexuality in a way straight people don't.

....I think straight people DO express their sexuality....its usually at every hippie, red neck country summer hoe-down festival across the country!
