Ross Watson's Classic De Novo - After Caravaggio

This painting refers to Caravaggio's first public work, The Calling of St. Matthew, where he was concerned with depicting powerfully three-dimensional figures by means of chiaroscuro.

The great majority of Watson's paintings are lit from the left, and in fact The Calling of St. Matthew is Caravaggio's only painting to be lit from the right.
