Gay Men at Higher Risk for Eating Disorders

Does a man's sexual orientation affect his risk for having an eating disorder? New research says it does.

According to a study conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, "gay and bisexual men may be at far higher risk for eating disorders than heterosexual men." The study results appear in the April issue of International Journal of Eating Disorders.

Researchers found that "more than 15 per cent of gay or bisexual men had at some time suffered anorexia, bulimia or Binge Eating Disorder, or at least certain symptoms of those disorders -- a problem known as a subclinical eating disorder -- compared with less than five per cent of heterosexual men," according to a news release.(

Hey, it's always been a known fact that gay men are a lot more concerned about our appearance than straight men.

This fact is what gave rise to the "meterosexual" you know. The fact that many straight women found gay men more attractive because of the clean, groomed, and in shape appearance. Some of the straight men got smart and decided to clean up, so to speak.
