A campaign spokesman confirms today that Democrat Jim Neal, who plans to challenge Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole next year, is gay.
Spokesman Thomas Mills says Neal spoke publicly about his sexual orientation over the weekend during an online discussion organized by a liberal blog.
Neal was asked on BlueNC.com if he is gay. He is quoted as saying he is and it's no secret. Neal also is quoted as saying he doesn't think it's a big deal.
He says he's not running against Dole to make a social statement.
Neal is a fundraiser for 2004 presidential candidates who has never run for public office.
He is the only Democrat who has announced he will run next year against Dole. (source)
