The Advocate, a national gay magazine included Lexington among the "Top 10 Best Places For Gays and Lesbians to Live" in its current issue.
The Advocate cited the city's openly gay public officials - state Sen. Ernesto Scorsone and Vice Mayor Jim Gray - a local gay nightclub and the city's 1999 ordinance that protects gays from job and housing discrimination.
It wasn't clear how Lexington was included in the top 10, and the Lexington Herald-Leader said the magazine didn't respond to a phone call and e-mail Tuesday.
The article will be good for Lexington, said Jeff Jones, a University of Kentucky employee who was mentioned in the magazine article.
"Anytime Lexington gets some press that it is a progressive, growing, tolerant city, somebody's going to read that and say, 'Maybe we should move to Lexington,'" he said.
Other cities that made the list were Dallas; Tucson, Ariz.; and Ferndale, Mich.
Mayor Jim Newberry said in a statement Tuesday that Lexington offers "something for everyone."
"Our diverse community has much to offer, including a rich arts and culture scene, a vibrant downtown and we are surrounded by a unique garden - our farms," he said.
Martin Cothran, senior policy analyst for the conservative Family Foundation, said he didn't want to argue with the magazine.
"If The Advocate's saying Lexington's a great town, we agree with them, which may be a first."
