FIVE-times Olympic champion Ian Thorpe returned home to Sydney yesterday from his three-month sojourn in Los Angeles.
Thorpe has spent much of the Australian winter training overseas in preparation for next year's Melbourne world championships.
Thorpe, who has not competed at a big-time meet since the 2004 Athens Olympics, is expected to return to training this week under coach Tracey Menzies. He celebrates his 24th birthday on Saturday.
It has been a testing year for Thorpe - illness forced him to pull out of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and a broken hand further delayed his return to the pool.
The world championships trials will be held in December in Brisbane.
