Zurich Will Host EuroPride 2009

Zurich has been chosen as the host of EuroPride 2009.

The Swiss city was chosen after a meeting of the European Pride Organisers Association in Madrid, the city of next year’s hosts.

Delegates discussed bids from Tel Aviv in Israel, and Mannheim in Germany, but chose Switzerland after the country recently approved civil partnership laws in a national referendum.

Officials from Madrid used the conference to show plans for next year’s celebrations which start on June 22 2007, it will include a sports event and parties.

EuroPride 2008 will be in Stockholm, Sweden.

This year’s EuroPride attracted over half a million people to London. It included a parade through the West End and a rally in Trafalgar Square as well as a show at the Royal Albert hall organised by Sir Ian McKellen and including appearances from Sir Elton John Stephen Fry and Sandi Toksvig.
