Gay Officer's Verdict Upheld In Suffock County

A state appeals court panel yesterday upheld a 2003 Suffolk County jury verdict awarding $624,000 to a Suffolk County correction officer who said he was harassed because he is gay.

Michael Salvi's car was vandalized twice, and he received children's alphabet blocks, glued together to spell a derogatory term, hand-delivered to his front porch, according to his lawsuit.

The court ordered the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department to pay the judgment, plus interest and legal fees. A department spokesman said lawyers are reviewing the decision.
