WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Tens of thousands of people jammed Santa Monica Boulevard on Sunday for the 36th annual LA Pride Parade celebrating the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities.
The parade began at Crescent Heights Boulevard at about 11 a.m. and headed west along Santa Monica Boulevard to Robertson Boulevard. Organizers expected up to 300,000 people.
Actress Lupe Ontiveros, a longtime activist in the effort against AIDS, is this year's grand marshal.
Ontiveros received an Emmy nomination last year for her portrayal of the mother-in-law of Eva Longoria's character on "Desperate Housewives." Her other credits include portraying the killer of singer Selena in "Selena" and the housekeeper in "The Goonies."
Elected officials set to participate in the parade included Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, and Assemblyman Lloyd Levine, D-Van Nuys, who will ride with members of Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs, students, teachers and their supporters from throughout Southern California.
Parking on West Hollywood residential streets without permits will be allowed until 7 a.m. on Monday.
