Alleged St. Martin gay basher surrenders to police

A man who is accused of leading a group of thugs who viciously attacked two gay New York journalists while they were vacationing on the Caribbean island of St. Martin has surrendered to police, the Associated Press reports. The 21-year-old suspect—who has been identified only by his nickname, "Duracell"—is the fourth person detained for the beatings. He is accused of striking the victims with a tire iron, said Taco Stein, the chief prosecutor in the case.

Authorities now believe they have arrested all of the people thought to be involved in the April 6 attack on Richard Jefferson and Ryan Smith, both of whom work for CBS News in New York. Jefferson was released from the hospital shortly after the attack, in which he suffered a severe head injury. He has been in St. Martin pressuring authorities to prosecute the case. Smith is still recovering and has had speech problems and other difficulties ever since the attack. (The Advocate)
