Shields & Holmes Give Birth to Weirdly-Named Children on Same Day in the Same Hospital on the Same Floor

God and/or L. Ron Hubbard sure has a sense of humor, doesn’t He? How else could you explain yesterday’s simultaneous births of Brooke Shields’ daughter, Grier, and TomKat’s baby girl, Suri, both at Saint John’s hospital in Santa Monica, California?

Shields and Tom Cruise, if you’ll recall, had quite the squabble last year (carried out the new-fashioned way – through print and television media) after the Mission: Impossible 3 star lambasted the actress for using prescription anti-depressants following the birth of her daughter Rowan in 2003. The Associated Press reports:

Appearing on NBC’s Today show, Cruise said there was no such thing as chemical imbalances that needed to be corrected with drugs, and that depression could be treated with exercise and vitamins.

Shields called the remarks “a disservice to mothers everywhere” and said the drugs helped her survive feelings of hopelessness after the birth in 2003.

“I’m going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruise has never suffered from postpartum depression,” she wrote in an op-ed piece in The New York Times last July.

Suffice it to say that there probably won’t be any joint birthday parties going on in the future. In fact, we’re predicting some pretty fierce turf wars at the Beverly Hills Chuck E. Cheese. (“Okay Grier, I’ll give you the entire area from the mosh pit of colored balls to the Skee-Ball alley, but everything from the tube slides to the creepy animatronic band is mine!”) The next 18 years should be fun, no?
