Beatrice Arthur, the tall, deep-voiced actress whose razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines made her a TV star in the hit shows "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" and who won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame," died Saturday. She was 86.
Arthur died peacefully at her Los Angeles home with her family at her side, family spokesman Dan Watt said. She had cancer, Watt said, declining to give further details.
"She was a brilliant and witty woman," said Watt, who was Arthur's personal assistant for six years. "Bea will always have a special place in my heart."(keep reading)

As sad as it is to see her go, she had a fantastic career and life. For those of us who are "middle aged," we got to see her through 4 decades of great comedy. We're lucky.
A sad day .......................
What a Brilliant Star.
Her comedic talent was irrefutable............ A shining icon. I haven't felt like this since Lucille Ball died.
Her Broadway career was glorious. Her film career which sprung from that was small but superlative. Her improbable ( at the time ) television career made her known to millions. She was discovered on television by a bit part in one episode of All in the Family.
Once she became Maude, she belonged to Popular Culture forever............ her work in The Golden Girls assured her place there........
Adieu, you Glorious Dame....................
