Tom Bianchi's "Once on This Island"

“Most photos of men are just collections of hot bodies, but I’m more interested in what the artist sees beyond the surface,” says Tom Bianchi, who captured 1970s Fire Island at its most intimate for “Once on This Island” in Out's October issue.

“Using a Polaroid camera gave the men a comfort zone for my work. They could instantly see I was trying to capture a beautiful part of their lives unknown to many gay men -- and the straight world -- at the time.”

Bianchi has published 18 photo books, directed three documentaries, and shot for countless magazines, including Blue and Playgirl.
