Michael Phelps Breaks World Record In Victoria BC

American Michael Phelps set a world record in the 200-metre individual medal and Canada's Brent Hayden earned his fourth medal of the meet with a bronze in the 50 freestyle Sunday at the Pan Pacific Swim Championships.

Phelps held off a determined challenge from teammate Ryan Lochte to win his race in one minute 55.84 seconds. That broke the record of 1:55.94 he set in 2003 at the U.S. national championships.

American Cullen Jones won the 50 freestyle in a Pan-Pac record time of 21.84 seconds. South Africa's Roland Schoeman was second in 22.12 while Hayden, of Mission, B.C., touched the wall in 22.22 seconds.

The 22-year-old Hayden is proving to be Canada's best medal threat at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He won the 100 freestyle at the Pan Pacs and swam on two relay teams that won silver medals.

Phelps set three world record at the Pan Pacs. Earlier he broke his own 200-metre butterfly record and was part of the U.S. 4x100-metre relay that set a world record.
