Michael Owen Returns

England Striker Owen Aims to Return in April From Broken Foot

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Newcastle striker Michael Owen said he expects to return from a broken foot ahead of the final month of the Premiership soccer season, boosting England's preparations for the World Cup.

The 26-year-old Owen hasn't played since breaking a metatarsal bone in his right foot during a collision with Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson on Dec. 31. The English Premiership season ends May 7.

``My recovery is going well,'' Owen told Newcastle's Web site. ``The surgeon seems happy that the pin is still in place and I want to be back for at least a month of the season.''

Owen, who became Newcastle's club-record 16 million-pound ($28.2 million) signing from Real Madrid in August, had already missed nine Premiership matches this season because of injuries. He moved to Newcastle to get regular action ahead of the World Cup in Germany after finding himself as understudy to Raul Gonzalez and Ronaldo in Madrid.

Owen scored three goals in England's past two matches to take his tally to 35 goals in 75 international appearances. He's fourth on England's list of all-time scorers behind Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker and Jimmy Greaves.

England, which has won the quadrennial World Cup only once, in 1966, faces Paraguay on June 10 in its opening match in Frankfurt.
