Cristiano Ronaldo Gets PFA Double Award

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has been named both the Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers' Association.

The 22-year-old Portuguese star is the first player to win both awards in the same season since Andy Gray received the double accolade in 1977.

Ronaldo has bounced back in great style from the controversy he aroused during last summer's World Cup, and become a key figure in United's attempt to win three major competitions.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba came second and Ronaldo's Manchester United team-mate and fellow midfielder Paul Scholes was third in the voting for senior award.

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs, last year's winner Steven Gerrard of Liverpool and 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas also made the shortlist.

He was widely booed at the start of the season for his part in Wayne Rooney's sending off in the World Cup quarter-final between England and Portugal in Germany.

But the abuse only seemed to inspire him and gone on to score 16 Premiership goals so far to help take United to the top of the table.

Ronaldo said it was an honour to be singled out by his peers, the fellow professionals. (keep reading)
