'Hippies' Win Amazing Race 9 - Frat Boys Still Hot

The ninth season of The Amazing Race came to an end Wednesday night when friends BJ Averell and Tyler Macniven crossed the finish line to claim the $1 million (U.S.) prize.
"It’s really unreal," said Macniven upon reaching the end.
The pair beat the team of Jeremy Ryan and Eric Sanchez and the team of Yolanda Brown-Moore and Ray Whitty.

The final leg of the race – which had teams searching for clues in Tokyo and drilling holes in the Alaskan ice – came down to a flag-arranging challenge.

The race ended where it began, in Denver. Nine other teams were eliminated during the series, which took teams through nine countries in five continents and spanned 59,000 miles.

Averell and Macniven, known throughout the show as "the hippies" used their knowledge of foreign languages and their sense of humour to persevere.

"Our friendship is what got us through this," said Averell.

Averell, 26, is an online tutor from Los Angeles and Macniven, 25, is a San Francisco-based filmmaker.
