Space Shuttle Discovery Blasts Off On Final Voyage

The repaired shuttle Discovery, grounded since November because of vexing fuel tank cracks, rocketed into orbit Thursday on its 39th and final flight, setting off for the International Space Station to deliver supplies, equipment and a final American storage module.

The takeoff went down to the wire: NASA had a last-minute problem with an Air Force tracking system computer, but it was resolved and the shuttle lifted off successfully with two seconds left in the launching window.

Igniting at 120-millisecond intervals, Discovery’s three hydrogen-fueled main engines roared to life at 4:53 p.m. Eastern time.(
