Priscilla Opens in Toronto & Snags Bette Milder as Producer

Singer Bette Midler has signed on as a producer of the stage version of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which opened in previews Tuesday in Toronto.

Midler has made a sizable investment in the Broadway-bound show and has earned billing as producer.

She is also reported to be ready to take a hands-on role in rehearsals for the show, which plays until Jan. 2 at Toronto's Princess of Wales theatre.

The stage version of the hit movie had its world premiere in Australia in 2006 before going on to London. Its official North American premiere is set for Oct. 26 in Toronto.

The play follows the adventures of three drag queen friends travelling the Australian outback in a battered bus. Olivier Award nominee Tony Sheldon, Tony Award nominee Will Swenson and Nick Adams star in the musical.

It heads to Broadway for previews in February, with the official opening on March 20. (CBC)
