Jason Collins Receives Postive Tweets
As soon as news broke that NBA athlete Jason Collins made the history-making decision to come out publicly as gay in a Sports Illustrated story this morning
, the tweets started!!
NBA Center Jason Collins Announces He's Gay
Jason Collins, a center who played for the Washington Wizards last season and is now a free agent, today became the first openly gay male player in a major pro sport, SI reports:
I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, "I'm different." If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand...
...Why am I coming out now? Well, I started thinking about this in 2011 during the NBA player lockout. I'm a creature of routine. When the regular season ends I immediately dedicate myself to getting game ready for the opener of the next campaign in the fall. But the lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want. With the season delayed, I trained and worked out. But I lacked the distraction that basketball had always provided. (more here & here)
Jets Dump Tim Tebow
It was 13 months ago that the Jets welcomed Tim Tebow to the team, introducing him in their spacious field house at a news conference attended by 200 members of the news media and that snarled traffic around the team’s facility in Florham Park, N.J.
On Monday morning, the Jets cut Tebow with no pomp, a victim of circumstance. They acknowledged an experiment gone awry with a news release that said, simply, “Jets waive QB Tim Tebow.” There was no mention in that release of Tebow’s statistics with the Jets, perhaps in part because there were none worth mentioning.
Tebow, acquired last March 21 from Denver in exchange for two draft picks and $2.53 million (roughly $1.5 million of which is still owed to the Broncos), played in only 77 offensive snaps for the Jets.(keep reading)

New York City 2013 Fleet Week Officially Cancelled
The U.S. military has officially canceled New York City Fleet Week this year, due to budget cuts brought on by sequestration.
"Unfortunately, there will be no Navy ships in New York this year for Fleet Week and no additional Sailors or Marines," Beth Baker, Fleet Week Director of Public Affairs, said in a statement.
Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week welcomes some 6,000 Sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen into New York City to celebrate their service.
The Navy usually spends between $7 million and $10 million on the event, which also is estimated to generate some $20 million in business for New York City. (hoffpost)

Alan Gendreau Wants to Become NFL's First Openly Gay Player
Alan Gendreau would seem an unlikely pioneer. He is a former kicker for Middle Tennessee State, the leading scorer in Sun Belt Conference history, a little-known 23-year-old who wants a shot at the N.F.L.
And he is gay.
Recent attention on the sooner-or-later milestone of an openly gay male athlete in a major American team sport has been spurred by a presumption: that the first will be a current professional athlete.
But those who have long tracked the issue have thought the more likely situation would involve an already-out athlete climbing through the college ranks to reach the N.F.L., N.B.A., N.H.L. or Major League Baseball.
They thought it would be someone like Gendreau. And it might be, if and when he can secure an invitation to try out for a team in the coming months.
Gendreau’s motivation is not to become the first openly gay player in the N.F.L. It is simply to play in the N.F.L.
“I’m a kicker that happens to be gay,” Gendreau said Tuesday. “It’s a part of who I am, and not everything I am. I just want to be known as a normal kicker.”
Gendreau’s story was detailed in a substantial feature and video released Tuesday by Outsports(keep reading)
