'Brokeback Mountain' Gains Steam
Who's afraid of a couple of gay cowboys?
Not moviegoers, who helped "Brokeback Mountain" post the highest per-screen average over the film-flush holiday weekend.
The Ang Lee film, which follows the 20-year forbidden romance between two roughneck ranch hands, earned $13,599 per theater, compared with $9,305 for weekend winner "King Kong" and $8,225 for "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe."
The big question is whether "Brokeback" can maintain its momentum as it moves from selected cities, where audiences are receptive to the subject matter, to suburbs far and wide, where that might not be the case.
Early numbers -- and early awards buzz -- establish the picture's staying power, industry insiders say. "Brokeback" earned a leading seven Golden Globe nominations.
"It delivered very strong growth in what is truly a highly unforgiving, competitive, cruel market at this Christmas period," said Jack Foley, president of theatrical distribution for Focus Features. "It showed it has breadth beyond the gay community."

Gay Soldier Assaulted at Arizona Army Base
FORT HUACHUCA, ARIZONA – Private Kyle Lawson, a 19-year-old Tucson resident, was physically assaulted and threatened at Fort Huachuca Army Base after fellow soldiers learned he is gay, according to a report in Sunday’s Arizona Daily Star.
Fearful for his safety, Private Lawson is leaving the Army, while the soldier accused of his assault appears to remain unpunished. Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) today called on Army officials to hold the responsible party accountable for the assault and called on the Pentagon to implement an Anti-Harassment Action Plan originally adopted in 2000.
The plan, SLDN has reported each year since, has never been implemented.
“Pentagon leaders have consistently refused to take harassment seriously, and our men and women in uniform continue to pay the price,” said Sharra E. Greer, SLDN’s director of law and policy. “The Pentagon has found, in its own survey, rampant anti-gay harassment in the armed forces. Service members report harassment, violence and threats to SLDN on a regular basis. At least two service members have been murdered because of unchecked anti-gay harassment. Yet military leaders have utterly failed to send a strong, clear message that anti-gay harassment is unacceptable or that those who harass will be held accountable for their actions.
The result is yet another anti-gay assault.”
According to the Star, Private Lawson’s nose was broken and he was later threatened with a knife after a friend revealed during a Battalion party that Lawson is gay. While the soldier who Lawson says attacked him was originally charged with aggravated assault by civilian police, Fort Huachuca officials have decided not to prosecute the case “for reason fort officials say they are not at liberty to explain,” according to the press report. Lawson says the solider used an anti-gay slur during the attack.

Elton Bitch Slaps Madonna - Again
Looks like getting hitched isn’t mellowing Elton John.
The Rocket Man blasted Madonna as a “miserable cow” for refusing to sing at the celebration of his civil union.
Elton John and his longtime companion David Furnish have entered into a legal partnership, as is now allowed in the U.K.
At a cabaret “hen night” the evening before, John called the event “one of the greatest things in my life,” though he took pains to complain that Madonna had been approached about the performing at the event. “Madonna, the miserable cow, wouldn’t do it,” he said. “David asked her three times.”
Former pals Madonna and Elton John had a very public falling out after John accused her of lip synching at concerts. “I'm sure he said it with great affection,” Madonna's spokeswoman told the Scoop. “Madonna wishes Elton and David all the best, I'm sure. She's on holiday with her family.”
