Vancouver Pride Attended by 385,000 People

Rainbows, water balloons and gay rights were front and centre at the 29th annual Vancouver Pride Parade as an estimated 385,000 people hit the West End Sunday afternoon to watch the parade dance its way down the street.

"It's incredible," said John Boychuk, Vancouver Pride Society President. "I've never, ever seen so many people down here."

Boychuk says his favourite part of the parade was getting to ride along on a Segway, the two-wheeled standing electric scooter. He says it allowed him to see sections of people standing 15 or 25 people deep to see the parade.

"It's such a thrill when you hear the people cheering," said Boychuk.

Spectators sat or stood row upon row along the sidewalk to glimpse parade entries like Dykes on Bikes, with women in leather, tutus and bikini tops gunning their engines. Other crowd favourites were Vancouver's Lesbian and Gay Square Dance club, who performed to a countrified version of Gloria Gaynor's club anthem "I Will Survive," and the Vancouver Men's Chorus with its choreographed dance.
